Adam Hawkey

Head of Sport Science and Performance at Solent University

Adam Hawkey is Associate Professor and Head of Sport Science and Performance at Solent University, Southampton. He is an Honorary Lecturer in the University of Dundee’s School of Medicine, Deputy Chair of the British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), and a Chartered Scientist with the Science Council. In addition to working with English Premier League football teams, he has also held professional roles at the Olympic, Paralympic, and Commonwealth Games, and been a researcher with NASA’s Biomedical Office at the Kennedy Space Center—investigating crew health during space flight.

Adam’s current research is focused on interventions to improve health and performance in various groups including astronauts, athletes, amputees, and ageing populations. Regularly presenting at national and international conferences, and publishing his findings in scientific journals, he also acts as a reviewer and editor for respected publications. Adam regularly facilitates knowledge exchange to wider, less specialised, audiences. Appearing as a professional commentator on radio, TV, and digital media, he has worked with the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5, SKY, National Geographic, and Discovery Channels, and provided expert statements for FIFA World Cups. Adam has also led various outreach projects for the Science Museum, the National Space Centre, and The Physiological Society.
