Call for Contributors:  The Many Futures of Education and Learning

Fast Future is asking future thinkers from around the world to submit thought pieces or full chapter proposals on how the future of learning and education might play out in the future. Our aim is to provide a diverse set of trends, new ideas, and radical perspectives on the future of learning and education at every level. Please share this Call for Contributors with anyone who you think might be interested in submitting a chapter proposal or thought piece.

This is an invitation for anyone that might be interested in exploring different paradigms for the future of education and learning. We encourage people from different fields of knowledge to submit their proposals. Every stage of the educational system is expected to be covered (including nursery, primary school, secondary, college, university level, corporate training, and life-long adult learning).

We encourage contributors with radical new ideas about the future of education to submit a short article or a whole chapter. Preference will be given to those who have both the strongest proposal and the most energy to support the promotion of the book to a global audience.



The book is designed to have the broadest possible scope about the future of education and learning at every stage (from nursery to adult learning). It will be edited by global futurists Rohit Talwar, Steve Wells, Alexandra Whittington, and education specialist Helena Calle.  The aim is to explore key topics such as:

  • Evaluating the current trends, challenges, and drivers of change shaping the future of education and learning at all levels (from nursery to adult learning, including corporate training).
  • Analyzing the purpose of education and how it might evolve with changes happening in society and the radical shifts of humanity that may impact the purpose of education.
  • Examining the trends, radical new ideas, and possibilities shaping the future models for learning and education.
  • Outlining radical new emerging models for how learning and education might be delivered.
  • Exploring the future learning applications of disruptive technologies and evaluating the potential impacts, benefits, and challenges that could arise.
  • Discussing multiple scenarios of the future of learning and education, including the role of stakeholders, the purpose of education, the design of the learning experience, and management models.

The editors do not wish to constrain potential authors and so the above are just examples of the topics that could be addressed. The core requirement is that the chapters be focused on the future of education and learning.


The Many Futures of Education and Learning

Key questions that could be explored within individual contributions could include:


  1. How might education and learning change in the future?
  2. What are the scenarios of the future of education and learning?
  3. How do we prepare children for jobs that do not exist today?
  4. How do we prepare ourselves for an ever-changing workforce?


Current state of play

  1. What are the challenges related to each of the levels of the educational system today: in business, in adult education, in higher education, and in schools?
  2. What are the radical models that are changing our perception of education?
  • What is the role of teachers? How are learning experiences being designed? What is the role of curricula?
  • What is the learner´s role? How does this model differ from the traditional way of learning?
  • How does this model implement soft skills learning into their curricula? How does it prepare students for the challenges of the next era?
  • What would be the role of the different stakeholders (private sector, government, students)?


Technologies that are changing the way we teach and learn

  1. What are the most disruptive technologies influencing the way we teach and learn?
  2. How is AI, natural language processing (NLP), image/voice/speech/video recognition, cognitive computing, and robotics influencing educational models, corporate training, and life-long learning?
  3. What impact might augmented and virtual reality (AR and VR) have on education and learning?


Scenarios of the future


Teaching and learning

  1. What would be the purpose of education?
  2. What types of learning experiences might be designed in the future for learners across all ages?
  3. How would the system be structured: in terms of classroom, age division, curricula, etc.?



  1. What might the role of the different stakeholders be: teachers, students, parents, organization, business, government, etc.?
  2. How would the system be funded?
  3. How would new management systems and practices maximize performance?
  4. How would monitoring and incentives be effectively implemented in the school system.


The role of public and private organizations

  1. How might the system be structured?
  2. How might data be used?
  3. What impact could automation have on the future of learning and education?
  4. What role might the government play in different models of the future of education and learning?


Corporate training and lifelong learning

  1. How could the changes happening in the workplace impact the way we educate people in organizations?
  2. What technologies would influence adult learning?
  3. How does lifelong learning look in different scenarios?



As the nature of chapters might vary considerably, we are not being too prescriptive; however, the following guidelines do apply:

  • Keep the description of the current situation and context to a maximum of 30% (600 words in a 2000 word chapter)
  • Be clear about the time frame you are considering e.g. next 10 years, next 20 years, by 2045, 40-50 years
  • Write for a generalist audience – assume no prior knowledge of the topic
  • Make it clear if you are basing your chapter on research, emerging thinking, or presenting a more speculative vision of the future – all are equally acceptable


Guidelines for Contributors


We are inviting two forms of contribution:

  1. a) a full length chapter of 2000 words – for which we require an initial 200 word synopsis
  2. b) A thought piece of 500 words.

If you are interested in submitting either a 200 word chapter synopsis or a complete 500 word thought piece, please use this link: Authors must commit to playing a very active and regular role in promoting the book to their networks and contact base before and after publication. Furthermore:

  • We seek original content and won’t use anything that has been published elsewhere
  • The book is aimed at a general non-specialist audience
  • This is not an academic publication – we will not include case studies or research reports
  • Contributions cannot promote products or services
  • Authors can re-publish their contributions three months after publication


Contributor Timetable


  • For chapter contributor: We will accept 200 word synopses of chapter proposals until August 31st 2018. For those selected to contribute, the complete chapter submission of up to 2000 words will be due by October 31st 2018.
  • For 500 word thought piece contributions, these need to submitted online using the link provided above by October 31st 2018.
  • We do not commit to publishing any of the proposed chapters or thought pieces.


Contributor Benefits


Participation in the book gives new and established authors the opportunity to be profiled to a global audience who may not already know you or be familiar with your work. The benefits of being included in the book are outlined below:

  1. The book will be marketed directly by Fast Future to over one million contacts around the world via social media, our regular newsletters, and the contact bases of the contributors
  2. Each individual contributor will also be promoting the book to their own networks
  3. Contributor profiles will be shared on the Fast Future website
  4. Our PR campaign will focus on highlighting topics and contributors in the book, driving the potential for media coverage for individual authors
  5. Each contributor will be invited to submit a comment about their topic and the book which will form part of the launch press release and be captured on the Fast Future website
  6. Contributors have the opportunity to create a short video on their chapter which will be carried on the Fast Future YouTube Channel
  7. Each chapter and contributor will be highlighted individually in our social media marketing campaign
  8. Contributors will receive ten free copies of the book in print form and one electronic copy
  9. Contributors will be able to nominate five individuals who will receive a free electronic copy of the book and be invited to supply a testimonial and / or review the book
  10. Contributors will receive a personal discount code giving their contacts a discount of 10% on the list price of the book
  11. Contributors will receive a commission of 20% of revenue for any purchases made using their discount code
  12. Contributors can buy additional copies of this book and any other Fast Future publications at a discount of 50% on list price (plus shipping for print books) for two years after publication
  13. Contributors may be invited to speak at events organised by Fast Future
  14. Fast Future may generate speaking opportunities for individual contributors
  15. Fast Future is happy to write supporting testimonials for all contributors.


Contributor Commitments


The effective development and publication of this book relies on the commitment of the contributing authors and we ask that:

  1. The Contributor hereby grants and assigns to Fast Future Publishing Ltd (Publisher), the sole and exclusive right to print, publish, and sell the Contributor’s submitted chapter in full or shortened versions in any language, in printed and digital form in any country or territory
  2. The Contributor is the sole originator and proprietor of the chapter; that the content has not heretofore been published in any form before
  3. Copyright of the content, if not heretofore registered, shall be held and retained by the Contributor
  4. The Contributor warrants to the Publisher that the work does not violate the right of privacy of any person; that it contains no unlawful matter; and that it does not infringe upon the copyright or violate any other right of any person or party
  5. The Contributor agrees to deliver draft and final versions of their chapter, in digital format (Word 2013 or earlier versions) to Fast Future Publishing, on or before the agreed due date
  6. The Publisher reserves the right to make reasonable editorial changes or deletions to the submitted chapter to ensure quality and consistency in the final consolidated work
  7. The Publisher shall have the right to use, and to license others to use, the Contributor’s name, image, likeness, and biographical material for advertising, promotion, and marketing of the work.


Contributor Agreement


Please note that submission of an article or chapter for inclusion in the book shall be taken as the Contributor’s agreement to the Contributor Commitments as listed above.


Submitting Your Proposal


To help ensure the success of the book, we would like all the contributing authors to play a full role in promoting the book. The proposal submission form includes compulsory questions on the following:

  • Your personal details, social media links, your full profile as you want it to appear on the book website (250 words), and a short profile to appear in the book (25 words)
  • Chapter title (up to 10 words), synopsis (200 words), and chapter structure or the full 500 word thoughtpiece
  • The size of your personal networks
  • Which publications, networks, channels, and bloggers do you think we should approach to help raise awareness of the book?
  • 3 additional specific actions you will take to help promote the book
  • Additional actions you think we should be taking to raise awareness and promote the book.
